Objectifs
The objective of this course is to provide an overview of language use and variation across different dimensions (sociolinguistic, contextual, stylistic, etc.) and their impact on oral and written norms. Students will develop practical skills in finding, analyzing, and evaluating information about English linguistic regularities.
They will learn how to use corpus linguistics tools to analyze vocabulary, collocations, and linguistic patterns; develop critical literacy skills to evaluate reference materials, online resources, and electronic tools for TESOL; understand the evolving nature of linguistic regularities and learn how to stay informed about language changes.

Corpus Linguistics for TESOL: Introduction to corpora (oral and written) and their applications in analyzing vocabulary and collocations, and using corpus tools to verify hypotheses, identify normative well-formed structures (teaching targets), and explore linguistic patterns. Critical evaluation and effective use of resources such as reference books, websites, and tools like electronic translators and AI tools. Critical literacy to assess the reliability of resources. Descriptive vs. prescriptive approaches and understanding how these perspectives influence interpretations of oral and written language.
