Objectifs
The overall aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach, evaluate and improve L2 reading and writing skills. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand and apply the key principles and methods of teaching reading and writing in ESL,
- design effective reading and writing tasks and activities that meet learner needs and promote engagement, fluency development and a focus on form,
- integrate metacognitive strategies and reflective practices into L2 reading and writing instruction,
- respond to learner errors using principled, written corrective feedback techniques,
- evaluate L2 reading and writing using appropriate tools and methods,
- leverage technological tools to improve the teaching, evaluation and learning of L2 reading and writing,
- conceptualize reading and writing as collaborative tasks,
- understand the importance of affective and cognitive factors, such as attention, memory, motivation, and language-related enjoyment and anxiety.
Sommaire du contenu
The focus of this course is on designing tasks and activities that develop L2 reading and writing skills. It covers key concepts, models, processes, approaches and metacognitive strategies for teaching reading and writing in ESL. The course also equips students with the ability to design and adapt texts, tasks and activities appropriate for different ages, skill levels and individual learner differences. Students will become familiar with multimodality (links between reading and writing, oral and written), genre analysis, text preparation, collaborative writing and the provision of corrective feedback and peer corrective feedback. Attention will also be paid to developing fluency through extensive reading and writing activities. Evaluation of reading and writing skills and the use of ICT to improve learning outcomes will also be addressed.
